Jumla to Rara Lake at Mugu

Annapurna Encounter offers a classic trekking in the Far North West of Nepal Himalaya, journey from Jumla to Rara lake at Mugu located in two different district area around high valleys of Rara Lake Nepal’s largest Lake, starting this fabulous trip with a scenic flight to the low area of southwest Nepal Terai at Nepalgunj city and with another short flight to Jumla a large town and district headquarter.

Jumla to Rara at Mugu trek leads through traditional villages of highlanders of this fascinating country, where the culture, traditions and religion as it was for centuries and way of life practicing both Hindu and Buddhism.

This wonderful trek is very impressive in total ambiance through enchanting beautiful forest of rhododendron, magnolia, birch and different varieties of pines and fir trees with different species of vegetations enriched with flora and fauna. Trekking to Rara Lake located within Rara National Park of106 sq.k.m with altitude range from 1,800 to 4,048 meters.

This amazing area is full of coniferous forest tree lines, the area around the Rara lake is dominated by blue pine, black juniper, to the West Himalayan spruce, oak, Himalayan cypress and other associated species.

At about 3,350 m, pine and spruce give away to fir, oak and birch. Deciduous tree species like Indian horse-chestnut, walnut and Himalayan popular are also found.

After a wonderful time from Jumla to Rara lake at Mugu with nice villages on this wonderful region, trekking into enchanting woodlands of beautiful rhododendron and tall pines and fir tree lines and heading further west direction around isolated and remote scenic area reaching much altitude gain to the highest point of this marvelous journey at 3,460 meters on top of Ghurchi Lagna pass and then concluding this overwhelming trip with a flight back from Jumla back to Kathmandu with great service of Annapurna Encounter

Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu 1,300 m and transfer to hotel.

Day 03: Fly to Jumla 2,370 m walk to Charya Chaur 2,800m- 04 hrs.
Day 04: Trek on route Botan via unnamed pass at 3,500 m - 06 hrs
Day 05: Trek to Botan 2, 680m via Sinja Khola 2,440 m -06 hrs.
Day 06: Trek to Ghorasain near Rara Lake 3,190 m - 04 hrs.
Day 07: Trek to Rara Lake 2,980 m - 06 hrs.
Day 08: At Rara Lake rest day for excursion around the lake
Day 09: Trek to Pina 2,580m via Jhyari - 05 hrs.
Day 10: Trek to Chauta 2,770 m via Ghurchi Lagna pass 3,460 m.
Day 11: Trek to Tharamara 3,270 m - 06 hrs.
Day 12: Trek back to Jumla - 06 hrs.
Day 13: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel.
Day 14: In Kathmandu free day or sightseeing tour.
Day 15: Transfer to airport for international departure.

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu meet our staff and transfer to hotel.
On reaching Kathmandu international airport our AE staff will receive with a transfer to hotel in the hub of Kathmandu around Thamel area, an interesting place with shops, stores, international standard restaurants. Our guide will meet and inform you with details of the hotels and trekking from Jumla to Rara Lake at Mugu and more.

Day 02: Fly to Nepalgunj (50 minutes flight) and transfer to hotel.
Morning at leisure with 2-3 hours sightseeing tour at places of interest around Kathmandu city and its valley, afternoon, our staff will accompany and transfer to domestic terminal of Kathmandu airport for 50 minutes sweeping scenic flight to Nepalgunj city located in the most warmer area of South West Nepal close to India border of UP, with great panorama of snow capped mountains during the flight, on reaching Nepalgunj transfer to respective hotels for overnight stop.

Day 03: Fly to Jumla 2,370m trek to Charya Chaur 2,800 m - 04 hrs
Early breakfast in the hotel and transfer back to Nepalgunj airport for another scenic short flight in a small plane to Jumla and it beautiful region, great views during 40 minutes airborne, on reaching Jumla received by our trekking staff, traveled a long way from Kathmandu to reach Jumla for the trek on overland journey by bus and on foot. From here a short walk of few hours away from Jumla town the administrative headquarter of whole Jumla area, and this trek is within Rara National Park at106 sq.km area.

After browsing the market of Jumla with uphill walk for short while to first night camp outside the town area at Charya Chaur with small farm villages around with time in the afternoon for walk around in this nice village.

Day 04: Trek on route Botan beneath a pass at 3,500 m - 06 hrs.
From this nice camping spot second day of walk is quite moderate with an uphill climb into rhododendron, birch and pine tree lined serene forest and then heading towards an unnamed green meadow ridge top and a pass sometimes it’s called Jaljala offering fabulous views of Kanjiroba Himal towards North East. Walk continues through tranquil wilderness then on the downhill path for couple of hours through cool forest and reaching on the summer grazing pasture area for the overnight camp in this nice, pleasant spot.

Day 05: Trek to Botan 2, 680m via Sinja Khola 2,440 m - 06 hrs.
Today walk leads to downhill walk to Sinja for few hours and then following Jaljala Khola (stream) downstream through a forest with dense pine forest and walking past terraced farm fields and terraces, to reach at Sinja village, with a very old ruin temple and monuments, ancient sculptured stones which is covered in moss and weeds, and from here walk follows the river upstream, reaching at Ganj a small village and then our route leads through an impressive gorge to our overnight camp at Botan village, with time for short walk around.

Day 06: Trek to Ghorasain 3,190 m - 04 hrs.
Morning walk today is only for half day of three to four hours, after leaving Sinja Khola following another stream Ghatte Khola heading North- Eastwards to climb a small hill, then reaching a lovely small valley and into farmlands with primitive water mills to grind corns, wheat’s into a fine flour, from here leading to our overnight stop at a little village of Ghorasain just near to Rara National Park border rim with police post, afternoon free at leisure for walk around or just relax and marvel the views.

Day 07: Trek to Rara Lake 2,980m - 06 hrs.
The final and highlight of this trip reaching at Rara Lake on today’s walk. morning trek starts into pristine environment with an uphill all the way to Chuchemara Danda at 4, 260 meters heights, from the ridge top amazing panorama of surrounding landscapes and of snow capped mountains in the north, after catching the fabulous views and then descending towards magnificent Rara Lake surround with beautiful woodland of bamboo, rhododendron and birch trees, then walking along Khatyar Khola upstream to camp for 2 nights at Rara Lake shore line.

Day 08: Rest day at Rara Lake for hike around.
Today, a full day at Rara to enjoy this beautiful and pristine lake which is the largest Nepal’s lake, an excellent spot for rest day and for hike around, close by an observation tower for better views and panorama of whole Rara area with snow capped peaks in the northern destination.

Day 09: Trek to Pina via Jhyari 2,580 m - 05 hrs.
After a lovely time heading back to Jumla by an alternative route, starting the morning walk on a gradual path leading to a top ridge of Jhyari village, and then walk follows Jhyari Bira Khola downstream for a while and crossing Dhauligar Khola valley, and continue following Dhauligar Khola (stream) all the way to a nice village of Pina for overnight stop, this is a moderate size farm village with police post and houses with lodge and tea shops.

Day 10: Trek to Chauta 2,770 m via Ghurchi-Lagna 3,460m - 06 hrs.
From Pina village, journey continues leading to a climb into serene and beautiful woodland of pines, firs, birch and rhododendron with grand vista of surrounding terrains and snow mountains in the north, continue with uphill walk reaching at Ghurchi- Lagna pass the highest spot of this wonderful trip marked with several chortens (a Buddhist monuments) and festooned with prayer flags, from here descending through meadows and summer pastures and into walnut groves then heading to a steep and narrow valley all the way to Chauta village for overnight stop, this small place with shops and houses serving as lodge for local and individual travelers and trekkers.

Day 11: Trek to Tharamara 3,270 m - 06 hrs.
After a pleasant halt at Chauta village, morning walk follows Sinja khola passing Bumra and past small lodge, tea-shops, health post, walking under an overhanging rock at Kamra, this rock an important herbal medicinal from mineral source called as Silaji. From here descend towards Sinja Khola, and then reaching Nyawre village, with a break here walk carries on following a river upstream and then a climb of about 600 meters to Tharamara for last overnight camp before Jumla.

Day 12: Trek back to Jumla - 06 hrs.
Final day walk to Jumla of this marvelous journey, morning walk starts with a gradual downhill into a nice green valley with pristine woodland of rhododendron, oaks and pines trees, and then reaching a fertile agriculture tended valley, walk leads past smaller villages of Padmara following the same river for some time on route Jumla town, finally after a great circuit and of Jumla to Rara lake and Muga area, reaching back at Jumla town for the last night in the mid hills of Nepal’s Far North West, afternoon at lesiure for walk around the busy market place of Jumla.

Day 13: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel.
Morning depending upon flight situation and time walk to the airport for the flight to Nepalgunj for transit stop to Kathmandu, after the flight from Jomsom with grand views during the flight get on another aircraft for super scenic with whole range of mountains views all the way to Kathmandu on reaching Kathmandu airport, our staff will transfer you back respective hotels in the hub of Kathmandu city after an amazing and awesome time in the high Himalaya region of Jumla and beautiful Rara Lake.

Day 14: In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour at places of interest.
A free day in Kathmandu in case of flight delay due to bad weather as the Himalayan weather are unpredictable sometimes if all goes well as per the planned itinerary, morning guided sightseeing tour ( on request) at places of interest. Kathmandu city and the surrounding valley steeped with history, culture. Kathmandu is full of World Heritage Sites with old Temples, Monasteries, Stupas, Royal Courtyard and Palaces, afternoon free at leisure for souvenirs shopping.

Day 15: International departure for home ward bound.
Last day in Nepal with memorable moment and awesome experience and good time with Annapurna Encounter services, as per the international flight time our AE staff will transfer you to airport for the flight back home or to respective countries.
