Forbidden Kingdom of Upper Mustang

Upper Mustang Trekking, one of the most picturesque country located Far North West of Nepal Himalaya range, once an isolated country from outside world which opened for visitors since last few decades.

Due to fragile and unspoiled pristine landscapes and country immense culture the Government of Nepal allows limited trekkers on obtaining special permits to visit this amazing Upper Mustang and its former kingdom within walled Lo-Manthang.

Fascinating walk of great interest with its scenic high dry terrain, which actually an extension of vast South West Tibetan plateau considered as world’s largest and highest table-land / plateau within the shade of local colorful Buddhist and Bon culture of pre Buddhism that still exists over hundred years of history.

Upper Mustang Trekking a journey of great interest with similar custom and traditions of Tibetan culture situated just a mere distance beyond from Lo-Manthang located on ancient Trans-Himalayan Salt / Caravan Route of Nepal & Tibet-China.

Starting this marvelous adventure taking a swift flight from popular touristic Pokhara city to land at Jomsom airport and headquarter town of Mustang region, where walks leads from lower Mustang areas heading towards North West to reach at Upper Mustang at Lo-Manthang.

Trek leads into interesting villages of great Buddhist culture with old monasteries on walks encountering long series of Mani / Prayer walls and Wheels with incredible landscapes of eroded canyon and high cliffs with red-brown and grey colored making the whole country a photogenic place.

After a great walks entering into our highlight and goal of the adventure at walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang an interesting large village with old monasteries of great importance, where our tour leads around to witness traditional life of Mustang people and visiting former palace of late Mustang Raja / King.

With grand moment at Lo-Manthang walk leads back to Jomsom allowing you with more times to enjoy its wonderful scenery and local culture, a scenic short flight completes our remarkable adventure on Upper Mustang at Pokhara with drive back to Kathmandu.

Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
Day 02: In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour at places of interest.
Day 03: Drive to Pokhara 860 m and transfer to hotel - 06 hrs.
Day 04: Fly to Jomsom 2,715 m and trek to Kagbeni 2,840 m - 04 hrs.
Day 05: Trek to Chele (Tshele) 3,050 m - 06 hrs.
Day 06: Trek to Geling 3,540 m - 05 hrs.
Day 07: Trek to Charang (Tsarang) 3,560 m - 06 hrs.
Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang 3,700 m - 05 hrs.
Day 09: At Lo-Manthang with rest day for acclimatization and local visit.
Day 10: Trek to Dhakmar 3,810 m - 06 hrs.
Day 11: Trek to Ghiling 3,806 m - 06 hrs.
Day 12: Trek to Chusang (Tsusang) 2,980 m - 06 hrs.
Day 13: Trek to Kagbeni - 06 hrs.
Day 14: Trek to Jomsom 2,715 m - 04 hrs.
Day 15: Fly to Pokhara 860 m (22 mins flight) and transfer to hotel.
Day 16: Fly or drive to Kathmandu and transfer to your respective hotels.
Day 17: In Kathmandu free day with optional tour.
Day 18: International departure for home ward bound.

Day 01:            Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to hotels.

On reaching Kathmandu via various respective airlines, walk to airport terminal exit, here our guide and staff receives you with warm greeting and then transfer into car or coach (depending upon group size) for short drive into the heart of Kathmandu city.


On reaching your hotel check into your rooms, after rest and refreshment join in the main hall or lobby to join with other members of Upper Mustang treks with do's and don'ts.


Evening includes welcome group dinner in a nice restaurant introducing you with typical Nepali cuisine with folk dance program of all parts of Nepal as entertainment.


Day 02:            In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour at places of interest.
Morning activities starts after breakfast, where our city guide will accompany you to interesting World Heritage Sites in our wonderful sightseeing tour, which helps you to gain knowledge regarding local culture and traditional life of Nepalese people as it was for many past centuries.

Tour leads around Kathmandu Durbar Square teemed with local life around historical sites and monuments, then heading due west at Swayambhunath Stupa (popularly known as Monkey Temple where large numbers of monkeys found around).


Tour continues to holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath towards east of the city, one of the holiest Hindu sites, where great festival takes place in the month of February known as Shiva Ratri. 


Then visit Bouddhanath huge Stupa, a Buddhist landmark the area also known as 'Little Tibet' due to strong Tibetan influence in religion-culture and traditional way of life.


After completing our day tour return to hotel with afternoon free at leisure with preparation for Upper Mustang Trekking. 


Day 03:            Drive or fly to Pokhara 950m - 06 hrs journey.
Morning traveling by coach or in private vehicles (depending upon group size), where drive leads on interesting and exciting highway, one of the busiest roads linking capital with other districts of Nepal.

 Heading towards Nepal Mid West to reach at beautiful Pokhara city located on a green valley surrounded with rolling hills and snow capped mountains.

On reaching Pokhara transfer to respective hotels near calm and serene Phewa Lake with afternoon free for short walks.

Day 04:            Morning Flight to Jomsom 2,700 and trek to Kagbeni - 04 hrs.

After a pleasant overnight in Pokhara, morning drive to airport for short scenic flight to Jomsom with close views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range of mountains as the flight touches at Jomsom airport located on the shelf of Kali-Gandaki River.


Jomsom, headquarter town of Mustang district, after Jomsom first day trek begins on Kali-Gandaki River valley around windswept country, few hours of good walk with great views of
Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiris then reaching Kagbeni village.


A nice Tibetan style village, this is a start and ending point of Upper Mustang area towards Forbidden City of Lo Manthang, on an old Himalayan Caravan trade route to Tibet.


Day 05:            Trek to Chele (Tshele) 3,050m - 06 hrs.

Morning walk starts with uphill climb into a canyon of high red eroded cliff edge, following upper upstream of Kailgandaki River, within unique landscapes of cliff walls, a nice walk with views brings you to our overnight stop at Chele, a moderate size village also spelled as Tsele.


Day 06:            Trek to Geling 3,540 m - 05 hrs.

From Tsele or Chele, morning begins with a climb to Gyakar village, and from here walk around dry and barren landscapes to reach at Samar village, one of the lovely looking villages of Mustang area.

After Samar village with short stops walk to Bhena and then leading with a steep climb to a ridge top of Yamda La pass at 3,860 meters high, offering grand vista of Mustang area with high mountains of Mt. Dhaulagiri.


From here on down-hill to overnight stop at Geling village via Syangboche village.


Day 07:            Trek to Charang (Tsarang) 3,560 m - 06 hrs.

Morning with time visit to its old monastery with Buddhist mani prayer wheels propelled with water power, after monastery tour trek to Ghami village and then cross Ghaymi Khola (stream) walk leads following a long and interesting line of Mani walls (holy prayer stone) from here walk to Dhakmar village, after hours of pleasant walk reaching at Tsarang village surrounded by large fields of crops buck wheat’s with overnight stop and visit of Tsarang old monastery.


Day 08:            Trek to Lo-Manthang 3,700 m - 04 hrs.

Today a short walk to Lo -Manthang of few hours trek to reach our main destination of this great adventure to enter the wall city (actually a large village) the fort guarding the city / village surrounded by high wall. At one time stood as a forbidden kingdom after monarchy rule ended in Nepal few past decade, on the walk coming across several chhorten and mani stones, between Tsarang and on Lo Manthang trail with grand views of arid landscapes in the shade of Nilgiri’s, Tilicho and Bhrikuti peaks.


Walk leads to Lo La pass at 3,950 meters with views of Lo Manthang the walled city and then descend reaching a nice trail to Lo Manthang for two night stops.


Day 09:            In Lo-Manthang for acclimatization and local hike.

Lo Manthang highest overnight stop of this journey, with time to explore this fascinating village with old Tibetan like houses enclosed within great high wall, visit historical and cultural centre the main attraction of Lo-Manthang.


The four main monasteries are Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lakhang (God House), Red Thubchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the great Entrance Hall.
Advance permission required to enter king’s palace to visit interior of the old palace and to grant audience with former king or Raja of Mustang if possible.


Day 10:            Trek to Dhakmar 3,810 m - 06 hrs.

After an interesting time in Lo-Manthang morning walk starts on the same route back to Marang village, and then walk west using an old path to Dhakmar village for overnight stop.


Day 11:            Trek to Ghiling 3,806 m - 06 hrs.

From Dhakmar village, morning walk heading on the same route with long series of Mani Walls, and then cross a bridge over Ghami Khola to reach at Ghami village for overnight, time permitting visit Geling monastery.


Day 12:            Trek to Chusang (Tsusang) 2,980 m - 06 hrs.

Slowly this fascinating walk comes to an end after a short climb to Syangboche village, and to Yamda La with grand views, then downhill to Bhena and Samar villages.

Walk leads by a stream passing Gyakar and Chele villages and finally ending this nice walk at Chusang village.


Day 13:       Trek to Kagbeni - 06 hrs.
From Chusang village rest of the journey is easier losing more altitude with moderate walks all the way with a big drop of 1,200m downhill to Kaligandaki river valley at Kagbeni for overnight stop with time to explore this interesting once again.

Day 14:       Trek to Jomsom 2,715 m - 04 hrs.
After a pleasant and refreshing overnight at Kagbeni village walk leads to Kaligandaki river valley to reach back at Jomsom for last overnight stop of this marvelous adventure.

Jomsom headquarter town of Mustang area with small airstrip above Kaligandaki River and main place of local Thakali tribes the native of Kaligandaki areas interwoven with Buddhism religion. 

Day 15:       Fly to Pokhara 860 m (22 mins flight) and transfer to hotel.
Early morning transfer to Jomsom airport where the flight times in the morning times before noon (due to heavy winds).

On boarding a small aircraft taking off for Pokhara with sweeping panorama of Dhaulagiri-Nilgiris and Annapurna range of mountains, on reaching Pokhara transfer to respective hotels for overnight stop by the Lake Phewa.

Pokhara, a popular touristic city, where the peaks of Annapurna Mountain range reflects on its beautiful serene lakes of Phewa and Begnas.

Day 16:            Fly or drive to Kathmandu and transfer to your respective hotels.
Morning a drive to Kathmandu after a wonderful experience on Upper Mustang trekking, on reaching Kathmandu transfer to your hotels with afternoon free at leisure for individual activities and shopping.

Day 17:            In Kathmandu free and spare day for individual activities.
A free and relaxing day in Kathmandu, relax and enjoy with individual activities shopping souvenirs or join in for another exciting sightseeing tour.

Day 18:            International departure for homeward bound.
Last day in amazing Nepal the country of Himalaya wonders, depart from the hotel as per your international flight for homeward bound or to your next destination country, our staff transfer you with farewell garland or Buddhist silk scarf 'Khada' for your safe and good journey, after a wonderful memories on Upper Mustang Trekking.
