Annapurna Encounter offers Overland to Holy Mt. Kailash an amazing trip on the roof of the world within highest and largest plateau on earth, this trip overland to Holy Mt. Kailash starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu and to the first town in Tibet at Nylam after Zhangmu for overnight stop through beautiful woodlands of rhododendron, pines and oaks trees and views of waterfalls, we have allowed rest day at Nylam for acclimatization before heading higher Tibetan terrain, the drive leads through the high pass at Lalung-la 5,050 meters high where the Tibetan plateau starts from here overlooking chain of world’s highest mountains including Mt. Shishapangma, Dorji Lakpa, Gaurishankar with Langtang mountain range.

Journey continues on the flat windswept landscapes reaching at Segar town by the river Bhrmaputra or Yarlung Tsangpo flowing from holy Mt. Kailash, after few nights on route with awesome views of the snow capped peaks and Tibetan dry arid terrain and over the pass of Mayum-la at 5,010 meters passing several towns, villages and nomads camps with hundreds of cattle and yaks grazing with chances of seeing some wild life the ‘Kang’ Wild Ass and other mammals along the drive, then reaching the sacred huge lake Manasarover for two nights after a nice stop, drive leads to the wild side of Barkha plain towards more west at Darchen town with magnificent views of Mt. Kailash South Face, and then a short drive to Tarboche to end the driving journey for few days, on the trek or kora around Mt. Kailash passing with overnight stop at Dhiraphuk and over the highest spot on top of Droma-la pass at 5, 470m /18,525ft a spiritual and sacred place for both Hindu’s and Buddhist religions with grand view of holy Mt. Kailash North Face. From here completing the steep climb with downhill to the flat wide level ground reaching at Zutulpuk with meditation cave of 11th century poet, saint Milereppa, from here concluding the holy circuit at Darchen town a moderate size town, in high season this place is flooded with Tibetan and Indian pilgrims, after feeling spiritually high returning back on the same route back to Kathmandu with night stops in Saga and Nylam town

Mt. Kailash at 6,714 meters or 22,028 ft, situated within Tibet. It is the perfect mountain with fascinating beastliness with four grand faces; it is the spiritual hub of four old religions: Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, the Jain and pre-Buddhist animistic religion-Bonpo. To Tibetans it is known as Ghang Rimpoche(Precious Jewel of Snow).

For Hindus, Spiritual centre of universe, described as a fantastic ‘world pillar’ around which all elements revolve, its root in the lowest hell and its summit reaching the heaven, the abode of well-regarded God Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel
Day 02: Drive to Nylam 3,550 m via Zangmu 2,300 m - 06 hrs.
Day 03: At Nylam for acclimatization and short walks.
Day 04: Drive to Saga 4,340 m - 06 hrs.
Day 05: Drive to Paryang 4,430 m - 06 hrs.
Day 06: Drive to Manasarover near Horpa 4,510m - 06 hrs.
Day 07: Acclimatization and rest day at Manasarover Lake.
Day 08: Drive to Tarboche,a Darchen 4, 530 m trek to Dirapuk 4,995m.
Day 09: Trek to Zutul-Puk. 4,760 m. approx 6 hour walk.
Day 10: Trek to Darchen - 05 hrS.
Day 11: Drive back to Saga – 07 hrs.
Day 12: Drive to Nylam. – 05 hrs.
Day 13: Drive to Kathmandu – 06 hrs.
Day 14: In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour.
Day 15: Depart Kathmandu for international departure.

In Kathmandu activities and extension to other interesting places:

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
On reaching Kathmandu international airport our AE staff will receive with a transfer to hotel in the hub of Kathmandu around Thamel area, an interesting place with shops, stores, international standard restaurants.
Our staff will meet and inform you with details of the hotels and overland to holy Mt. Kailash.

Day 02: Drive to Nylam 3,550 m via Zangmu 2,300 m - 06 hrs.
Starting early morning with a drive towards Nepal/ Tibet border passing interesting villages town of Banepa and Dhulikhel with great views of mountain panorama along the drive then following the Bhote Kosi river for a while till Kodari at Nepal frontier after going through immigration and visa process a short walk to the Nepal-Tibet Friendship bridge, here received by our Tibetan guide and driver for a short drive uphill to Zhangmu town, here again with visa and Tibet permits process with time to change Nepali rupees for Chinese Yuan and change of time also which is Beijing Standard 2 hrs and 15 minutes ahead than Nepal time. From here another few hours of drive through a gorge of Bhot Kosi river with beautiful woodlands of rhododendron and pine trees and waterfalls on this winding uphill drive, on leaving the forested areas and tree lines reaching at Nylam town, from here onwards starts the Tibetan plateau and arid landscapes.

Overnight in simple lodge or guest house in Nylam which is a moderate size town, which is important to stay here for acclimatization at this high elevation of 3,550 meters high.

Day 03: At Nylam for acclimatization.
An `important and necessary with extra days here in Nylam on this high altitude for acclimatization before heading higher over Tibetan plateau and to Mt. Kailash a short visit to 11th Century poet saint Milereppa Cave and its monastery nearby.

Day 04: Drive to Drive to Saga 4, 340 m -06 hrs.
Morning after breakfast drive over high passes at Lalung-La of 5,050m with great view of mountain range from Shishapangma 8,013m, Gaurishanker 7,134m, Langtang ,7234m and array of adjoining peaks, the drive continues passing many villages and farm fields with nomads camps with their cattle’s of sheep’s and Yak grazing, then crossing the river Brahmaputra or Yarlung Tsangpo then the drive finally reaching Saga a moderate size town which is slowly developing into a city.

Day 05: Drive to Paryang 4,430 m - 06 hrs.
Starting the morning drive earlier, another long day journey leading past Saga towards complete wilderness, after few hour’s drive over a pass at 4,900m. then descending to a long stretch of Tibetan flat plains, on a clear day great views of snow clad peaks of north west Nepal on the drive most of the way. The drive passes few villages after every few hours of this scenic drive and then eventually coming to a desolate windswept village of Paryang with 20 or more houses and Guest houses, lodge, the facilities are minimum and simple.

Day 06: Drive to Horpa eastern side of Manasarover 4,510m -06 hrs.
Morning drive leads to more barren, arid terrains with few stops passing small villages and nomads camps, with large Tibetan tents serving as teahouses and restaurants, journey continues on the vast plains and then climb up to a last pass of Mayam-la at 5,030 m, the drive meanders with a long ascend to the top and then descending to a wide valley to Lake Manasarover eastern shore for overnight stop.

Day 07: Rest day for acclimatization at Manasarover.
Another rest day allowing you to acclimatize better before the walk around Mt. Kailash and to reach the high pass of Drom-la of above 5, 400 meters, here ( on request driver for circuit of lake Manasarover). Manasarover a holy lake, located South West Tibet between Mt. Kailash 6,714 meters and Mt. Gurla Mandhata Range 7,694 meters and Lake Manasarover floats below on the shadow of holy Kailash as the lake formed as mind of God. In any language, this is the holiest, most famous lake in all Asia.

Day 08: Drive to Tarboche 4,700 m trek to Dhirapuk 5,010 m - 05 hrs.
After a fine time with rest day, starting the morning with a short drive on the windswept valley plain to near Darchen town, which is a busy place with market, during high pilgrim season it is crowded with Tibetan and Indian pilgrims for kora, parikrama or holy circuit.

While journey carries on beyond Darchen to Tarboche west of Mt. Kailash and this palce regarded as holy spot where the festival takes place (Saga Dawa) in end of April or in the month of May at Buddha’s birth anniversary, from here starting the holy walk leading north on the wide exposed dry, arid terrain to Shershong, and with gradual uphill slopes and pleasant but hard walk due to altitiude after 3-4 hours reaching at Dhiraphuk Gompa for overnight stop either in simple lodge or in tents, this place offers stunning view of Mt. Kailash North Face.

Day 09: Trek to Zutul-Puk 4,790 m - 06 hours.
From this scenic spot, morning walk continues with a climb up the moraine for few hours leading to the highest spot of this trip at Dromo-la 5, 470m /18,525ft, regarded as holy and main spot for prayer and as well with offering rituals, the top with big boulder representing goddess Dolma or Dromo (Tara) festooned with thousands of prayer flags and offering by Hindu’s and Buddhist pilgrims.

This holy place a physical and spiritual high spot for pilgrimage or kora, after a nice stop here, descend towards a wide valley plain and then on reaching the bottom of the pass, walk gets pleasant reaching at Zutul-Puk Gompa for overnight stop in tents and lodge depending upon the season and pilgrims crowd.

While “Zuthul” a Tibetan name for cave, this place was a meditation spot of 11th century poet, saint Milareppa, his footprints can be seen on a rood cave.

Day 10: Trek to Darchen and complete the circuit or kora.
Today the last day of this holy circuit and kora, morning walk leads to a nice gradual walk for few hours on the winding trail, reaching at a narrow valley

Gorge, from here our walking route turns west towards Darchen, to complete this holy spiritual walk.

Day 11: Drive to Saga 4,500m - 06 hrs.
Leaving the Barka wide plain to other side of the territory, driving over Mayum-la pass at 5,050 meters, to reach other side of the huge valley with fabulous views of snow capped mountains bordering Tibet and Nepal, a scenic drive leading past many scattered farm villages and nomads camps with large heard of sheeps, goats and yaks grazing on this wide exposed valley and crossing few short high passes reaching at Saga town for the overnight in good lodge or hotels. Saga town slowly truning into city in few years time, located near the holy river Bhramaputra or Yalrlung Tsangpo from the source of Mt.Kailash.

Day 12: Drive to Nylam 3,550 m - 05 hrs
After Saga heading east as the drive gets closer to Nepal mountains, and then crossing this great wide river on a long bridge and heading due east on the vast barren plains of Tibetan plateau with wonderful views of mountains bordering with Nepal and the great bulk of Mt. Shishapangma world’s last 14th highest at 8,013 meters with adjoining Langtang, Jugal Himal and Dorji Lakpa peaks. After 4-5 hours of scenic drive reaching on the last pass of this trip at Laylung-la at 5,050 meters with amazing scenery and panorama of great mountain range with close views of Langtang, Dorji Lakpa, Shishapangma, Gaurishanker to Numbur, all these mountains bordering Tibet and Nepal, from here end of the Tibetan great plateau as the drive descends to river gorge narrow valley passing many interesting Tibetan villages and its farmlands and finally ending the day drive Nylam town for last overnight stop in Tibetan soil.

Day 13: Drive to Kathmandu via Tibet / Nepal border - 06 hrs.
Today, last day in Tibet for few hours as the drive leads back to lush vegetation and tree lines of rhododendron, pines and oaks forest, the drive continues on winding downhill road following the Bhote kosi river downstream as our drive reach at Zhangmu border town, here going through immigration and custom process and continue a short drive to the Nepal / Tibet, China Friendship Bridge. On leaving and bidding farewell to our Tibetan guide and drive, and after the bridge back in Nepal soil and to Nepal immigration at Kodari, here again with the passport and visa formalities, then 4 to 5 hours of good scenic drive brings you back at Kathmandu and transfer to respective hotels after life time experience Overland to

Day 14: In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour at places of interest.
A free day in Kathmandu with morning guided sightseeing tour (on request) at places of interest. Kathmandu city and the surrounding valley steeped with history, culture. Kathmandu is full of World Heritage Sites with old Temples, Monasteries, Stupas, Royal Courtyard and Palaces, afternoon free at leisure for souvenirs shopping.

Day 15: International departure for home ward bound.
Last day in Nepal with memorable moment and awesome experience and good time with Annapurna Encounter services, as per the international flight time our AE staff will transfer you to airport for the flight back home or to respective countries.
